Do I Need a Phone Case?

Multiple, multi-colored iPhone cases

With the increased commonality of smartphones, nearly everyone is walking around with an expensive, breakable piece of technology in their pocket or in their hand. Any item that you keep with you 24/7 and are constantly pulling out of your pocket or purse, messing with, and putting back in is inevitably going to be dropped. Somewhat surprisingly, however, a recent survey revealed that one in four smartphone users do not use a case:

One-in-four Smartphone Owners Don’t Use a Case to Protect Their Phone According to NPD

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, DECEMBER 23, 2013 – While a large portion of smartphone owners do use a case to protect their smartphone, one-in-four go case-less, according to The NPD Group’s recent Smartphone Case Segmentation Study. Among this group, almost 70 percent…

Why aren’t they using a case? Are they insane? Is the phone really as breakable as all that? One argument against using a case is that phones are much more durable than they used to be. Perhaps you’ve read an article like the one below, and are now convinced that you don’t need a case:

You Probably Don’t Need A Case For Your iPhone 5

Rarely do people dare take their phones into the wild concrete jungle without a case. Mostly because we fear that dropping it will shatter the screen, which means either replacing the whole phone, or the screen, or just putting up with it — none being good options. So instead, they deal with the case, just in case (ahem) the phone gets out of hand. However, what most people don’t realize is how sturdy iPhones have become. …

This article offers strong proof that the iPhone 5 is quite durable and most likely will survive many a drop without being in a case. All well and good. But what we may not all realize is that not ALL phones, no matter how new they are, are going to be that strong. The long and short of it is that most phones are breakable, and the odds of them at some point being dropped onto a hard surface are high. Mónica Guzmán gives a very strong argument for why everyone should keep their phones in cases in this amusing article:

5 reasons I think you’re nuts if you own a naked iPhone

I pride myself on being able to argue reasonably, listen respectfully, consider new perspectives thoughtfully and — most of the time — withhold judgment. But I just don’t get it. Anyone who uses a newer iPhone without a case must be completely nuts. …

So, if you have not done so yet, it’s time to break down and buy a strong case. If you don’t know which one to get, check out Discount Reviews to see what’s on the market.
