A report from Digitimes only yesterday has tipped us off for what we might expect for Google’s 2014 tablet – another inch.
Google turns focus to 8-inch tablet market
Seeing its second-generation Nexus 7 demand has been impacted by competitors’ low-price 7-inch tablets, Google is planning to turn its focus to the 8-inch model market in mid-2014, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. …
Why this sudden pulling away from the average 7-inch tablet? Jerome Skalnik from EyeOnMobility offers a plausible explanation:
“The increasingly crowded and ever cheaper 7-inch tablet market is reportedly pushing Google to the larger-sized tablet. The first Nexus 7 launched into a far less crowded market and was able to rack up sales of about 6 million units. A very different landscape greeted the second Nexus 7 at its launch this past summer. Not only had prices come down quickly but a wider range of tablets was also available. That trend is not expected to change in 2014. Google is thinking that an 8-inch tablet may help it better stand out in this glut of cheap tablets.”
In addition to the increase in size, there is speculation that the tablet will now be Intel powered:
Rumor: The next Google Nexus 7 will be an 8 inch Intel powered tablet made by ASUS
Google is likely going to refresh the Nexus 7 this year, just like they did the year prior. According to DigiTimes, ASUS will still be making the product, but get this: The 7.0 inch screen be be bumped up in size to 8.0 inches. And the Qualcomm processor in the current Nexus 7 will be replaced with one from Intel. …
Unfortunately at this point all we have to go own are rumors and speculations. Do you think them plausible?
