Paper Wars

The post Paper Wars appeared first on MoTech Radio.

Paper by FiftyThree

Just yesterday, Facebook released its new app, paper, for U.S. iPhone users. The app is a new, magazine-like way to view the newsfeed on mobile devices. Start-up company FiftyThree, however, is unhappy with Facebook for using their name. BBC explains the situation:

Facebook asked to change Paper name

The original Paper was developed by start-up FiftyThree and won Apple’s 2012 iPad app of the year. It allows people to sketch on their iPad and has garnered 100 million users. Facebook’s Paper is designed as an alternative way to read newsfeeds. …

FiftyThree has published a blog post regarding the issue, explaining that they’ve “reached out to Facebook” but have not received a satisfactory response. Facebook so far has remained silent on the issue, but you can read Fifty-three’s post:

Every Story Has a Name

FiftyThree’s story began with Paper. What began with three guys building an app out of a New York City apartment has gone on to become one of the most celebrated applications on iOS, defining mobile creativity and winning Apple’s 2012 iPad App of the Year. …

If FiftyThree decides to take Facebook to court over the issue, it looks like they might actually have a strong case. Tech Crunch explains trademarking and how it’s affecting the situation:

FiftyThree Files Trademark For “Paper”

Yesterday, as Facebook launched its news reader app Paper, design-focused startup FiftyThree called out Facebook publicly for using their brand name. Facebook declined to change the name of their brand new reader app. …

What do you think? Should FiftyThree take on the multi-million dollar company, or just cut their losses? Whatever happens, Fifty-three’s Paper is certainly getting a lot of publicity.
