Reports are going around that Microsoft may have shot themselves in the foot. Nearly 2 ½ years after Microsoft’s original plans for a version of Office suitable for a tablet or smartphone, the company finally supposedly has a completed version – and yet they are still not releasing it.
When it comes to the mobile world, Microsoft has a lot of missed opportunities under its belt. As one report puts it:
“Microsoft’s mobile failure is twofold — not only did it miss the mobile phone wave with the late-to-market Windows phone operating system, the company also is slow in getting its Office suite into the hands of mobile users on the iOS platform.”
Sadly, this has been going on for some time. Apple Insider discusses the somewhat crazy history of Office for IOS platforms:
The many (alleged) lives of Microsoft’s Office for iOS
The Redmond, Wash. software giant “already has a full iPhone and iPad version of Office ready for release,” Gerry Shih and Bill Rigby reported for Reuters late Thursday. “The only question is when Chief Executive Satya Nadella, who took over in February, will pull the trigger.” …
At this point, not only has the company yet to release an Office suite functioning on IOS platforms, it doesn’t even have a touch-friendly version out for Windows 8 users. Reuters has the full report on the current situation:
Microsoft poised to fight back as iPad generation shuns Office
(Reuters) – It may be one of Microsoft Corp’s biggest squandered opportunities. Tired of waiting for Office to be optimized for their mobile gadgets, a growing contingent of younger companies is turning to cheaper, simpler and touch-friendly apps that can perform word processing and other tasks in the cloud. …
The long and short of it is, Microsoft is losing money, and its Office suit is on its way to becoming obsolete.
